|THEOLIA and the Office National de l'Electricité intend to jointly develop and construct a 300 MW wind farm in Morocco (2011/06/01 07:00 AM)|
On May 31, 2011, the Second Energy Conference, presided by his Majesty the King Mohammed VI and organized by the Moroccan Ministry of Energy, Mines, Water and the Environment, was held in Oujda, Morocco on the theme “Green energy, a momentum for Morocco”.
In this context, THEOLIA and the Moroccan Office National de l'Electricité (ONE) have signed an agreement for the joint development and construction of a 300 MW wind farm in Tétouan near Tangier.
Morocco possesses significant wind resources and a strong political will to promote electricity production from renewable energy sources. This location is particularly suited for the development of wind energy.
THEOLIA has been present in Morocco for a number of years through the Compagnie Eolienne du Détroit. This subsidiary operates the Koudia al Baïda wind farm, located in Tétouan, in the framework of a concession with the ONE. This wind farm, with a current capacity of 50 MW, was commissioned in 2000.
THEOLIA and the ONE, sharing the same strategic vision and the same desire to significantly develop wind energy in Morocco, are thus committing to a new long term partnership. THEOLIA will be the majority investor in the entity holding the future wind farm; the ONE will hold 20%.
The project, which will be developed in two phases, consists of:
the construction of 100 MW on the existing Koudia al Baïda site, in the context of replacing the existing turbines with higher capacity turbines (repowering); and
the construction of an additional 200 MW on sites next to this wind farm.
The launch of the first phase of construction is planned for June 2012.
This project falls within the ONE's Integrated Program for developing 1,000 MW of wind energy. For THEOLIA, this project represents an additional gross capacity of 250 MW.
Fady Khallouf, THEOLIA's CEO, stated: “Morocco has very strong wind energy potential. Our successful and balanced cooperation, in the context of our current concession with the ONE, has encouraged us to reinforce our presence there. Today, we are committing ourselves to a new long term industrial partnership with the ONE, in order to develop a 300 MW wind farm. This is a new opportunity for THEOLIA to display its technical and environmental know-how in terms of wind farms. Morocco thus becomes a key country for the Group's growth.”
